Throughout the process of my project I was required to track my progress through journals. These journals outlined my mindset at that moment as well as the struggles I experienced as the song developed. The following passages are excerpts from my first and third journals.
Journal One "The song has become focused on how the world around us typically controls the media. Specifically I have addressed how society influences our view of ourselves, our choices, and our lives. The world runs on time and money (though if you ask many people you may find that those two things are synonymous)... Society tells us that we must speak, act, and appear a certain way or we will be ostracized and metaphorically dead to the world. If we do not fight the lull that the world attempts to put us in, we will succumb to monotonous existence devoid of all individuality and light."
Journal Three "This process has called in the ability to utilize proper sentence meter in order to create something akin to poetry, The amount of stressed syllables followed by unstressed syllables as well as the total amount of syllables influences the sound and feel of the piece. The true difficulty of this use of meter is that this subject has never been taught to me within any class. Because of this, I must rely on my innate sense of the music and the phrases in order to create the most cohesive lyrical content.
Journal Four "Regardless of the product I have produced, the project itself transformed into a prime, real world example where my work has a definitive end. This idea will be shown again once I graduate. Overall this process has given me a true sense of the phrase I've heard quite frequently but never fully understood: 'This too shall pass.'"
