"Despite [the] increasingly popular opinion that music is solely for entertainment, all genres... possess and integral role in self-discovery and without it we as humans do not gain full insight into who we are. As a result, we must view all forms and aspects of song as a method to reach our complete potential by recognizing music's ability to help us understand our personalities and develop our characters, help us regulate mood, and create a more understanding outlook on our capabilities and mistakes."
My thesis focused on the psychological benefits of music, but rather than addressing the established health benefits I instead chose to research how we may use music to analyze ourselves as people. Music is an non-judging medium for us to confront aspects ourselves that we may not like very much. Within the comforts of melody we do not have to be embarrassed for some parts of ourselves.
The actual way that we can utilize music in a deeper way is completely subjective and depends on how the person wishes to mediate on certain subjects. The only thing that must occur for music to help us develop is that we must understand how it can do so and give it the chance to act as a foil. We must take time to ourselves so we may grow as people which is something that will help anyone regardless of connection to music. However, it is the unbiased outlook songs give us in a safe environment without fear of judgement which allows us to be critical of our character and not be ashamed.
